Logroño, European city of sport 2014

The Spanish Federation of municipalities and provinces (Femp) has designated Logroño as European City of Sport 2014.

This recognition was awarded at the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels. The award's main objective is to enact the social function of sport to achieve an improvement in physical welfare, increase the quality of life of citizens and facilitating social integration.

In order to implement these objectives, the city of Logroño organizes various events and sports activities throughout the year.

Logroño has been designed European City of Sport due to the high quality of its sports facilities, the wide sports offer given both to its citizens and visitors and to the good image the City has shown during the important sports events held during the last years.

Some of the major sport events that Logroño has hosted:

• Official match of the Spanish Football Selection against Liechtenstein
• The International Basketball Tournament attended by Spain, Brazil and Argentina.
• Spanish Cup of indoor football.
• Cup Davis play-offs between Spain and Switzerland.
• Leg of the Tour of Spain of 2012 held through Logroño streets.

Values associated with sport, as effort, commitment and spirit of achievement are reflected in its citizens who have a great tradition and love for sports.
